Data sovereignty: 90% of tech companies are now weighing the risks

Do you know who can access your company's data once it's stored in the cloud? It's a question that worries organizations more every day. According to a recent study by CHANNEL PARTNER, sponsored by IONOS CLOUD, nearly 90% of the tech companies surveyed have already considered the risks of failing to secure their data sovereignty — a concern that is fueling growing interest in European cloud solutions and changing how companies choose their technology providers.

Data sovereignty is no longer optional for businesses

The CHANNEL PARTNER barometer finds that 85% of software (ISV) and managed service (MSP) providers have been asked by their clients where their data is stored and who can access it. In addition, around 72% already build digital sovereignty into their business strategy.

These results reflect an important shift: protecting information is no longer just about avoiding cyberattacks or meeting compliance requirements. It also means knowing which legislation governs your data, keeping control over it, and reducing dependence on outside providers. Digital sovereignty is becoming a factor of trust and competitiveness.

Why more companies are turning to the European cloud

Geopolitical uncertainty and reliance on large technology platforms are leading many organizations to rethink where they host their information. According to the study, 43% of respondents intend to move data and systems to European cloud providers, while another 23% are considering it.

Migrating isn't without its challenges, though: cost, technical complexity, and dependence on specific providers can slow the transition. That's why having the right cloud infrastructure and migration strategy is key to moving forward without disrupting the business.

AI raises a new concern: where does your data actually end up?

The growth of artificial intelligence has added a new dimension to digital sovereignty. More and more companies use AI tools to analyze documents, automate processes, or manage internal information — but what happens to the data they share with these platforms?

The study finds that 74% of respondents are concerned about the risks of using AI tools from non-European providers, since business information could end up subject to foreign legislation.

This reinforces how important it is to evaluate where data is processed and what guarantees the tools in use actually offer. AI solutions for businesses deployed in private environments help keep greater control over corporate information and reduce the risk of sharing sensitive data with third parties.

Keeping control of your data is also a competitive advantage

The barometer's results point to a clear conclusion: data sovereignty is shifting from a purely technical concern into a strategic business decision.

Deciding where information is stored and processed affects security, regulatory compliance, technological independence, and customer trust. That's why more and more organizations are looking for solutions that combine data protection, flexibility, and controlled costs.

At Cloud Levante, we help companies design, migrate, and manage cloud infrastructures, as well as implement AI solutions tailored to their security and privacy needs. Because keeping control over your data isn't just about protecting today's information — it's about preparing the business for the future.
